Primary schools across southern Perthshire are receiving sustainably built birdboxes to help them appreciate and protect their local wildlife.

Pupils from Fossoway Primary School’s Eco and Outdoor Learning Committees were on hand on Friday to receive a delivery of 10 birdboxes from Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT) and Tom Rawson (founder – GreenTweed Eco) as the Perthshire Primary School Birdbox Project completes its second year.

Speaking on the project Catherine Leatherland (Discovery Learning and Engagement Officer – PKCT) said:

“Tom has created some fantastic sustainably built birdboxes and it is great to see these make their way to schools and playgrounds across Perth and Kinross and beyond.

These safe nesting locations will not only provide shelter for raising chicks but also for butterflies, bees, and other insects throughout the year. Having these across the region will give pupils the opportunity to really appreciate the nature on our doorstep.”

In 2023 the Perthshire Primary School Birdbox Project provided 10 boxes to 35 schools in the area, with all remaining primary schools receiving their deliveries in the first months of 2024.

In addition to their efforts in Perth and Kinross, GreenTweed Eco have carried out similar projects across the country with birdboxes already delivered to schools in the Borders, East Lothian and the Highlands.

Founder of GreenTweed Eco Tom Rawson said:

“It’s been an honour to travel across the area and see the enthusiasm that pupils have for nature and wildlife.

We hope our birdbox deliveries play a small part in engaging and inspiring the future guardians of the environment.

We’re also grateful for the funding provided by PKCT and The Jimmie Cairncross Charitable Trust that helped make this project possible.”
