Rangers get the Cateran Trail Yomp ready

Cateran Trail Rangers have been hard at work improving accessibility to make the route ready for the Cateran Yomp this weekend (11 & 12 September).

Rangers are replacing waymarker discs; have installed safety signage at East Gormack near Blairgowire; are strimming and managing vegetation at key locations; and generally engaging with visitors on the Trail – one of Scotland’s Great Trails.

The Cateran Yomp is an annual charitable challenge held on the Cateran Trail in aide of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. Participants take on 22, 36 or all 54 miles in teams to raise money for the charity and have a great time in Perthshire and Angus glens. The event was cancelled in 2020 and postponed until September 2021 due to Covid-19 but is planned to go ahead this weekend, 11 & 12 September.

Andrew Barrie, PKCT’s Strategic Routes Officer who manages the Cateran Trail, said:

The flexibility of Rangersto carry out maintenance and repairs on the Cateran Trail is proving to be invaluable to visitors’ enjoyment of the route. It makes a huge difference having improved signage to follow and vegetation cut back to improve access. We wish all the Yompers best of luck with weekend and hope they find the Trail easier than ever to navigate.

We are delighted to be helping to manage the Cateran Trail and make it more accessible for visitors. We are really looking forward to hear how the Yomp goes this weekend and are sure that all the participants will have an amazing experience they will not forget!

Funding for this Ranger project is coming from NatureScot’s Better Places Green Recovery Fund, which aims to help communities and destinations start or develop further pro-active visitor management in “hot spot” locations.

Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust (PKCT), who manage and maintain the Trail, received the funding for the summer post and will work closely with the Ranger team from Hushwing Ranger Service – a co-operative of freelance countryside heritage Rangers and creative educators.
