PKCT tree expert talks to Landward Perth & Kinross Countryside Trusts (PKCT) tree expert Tom Christian provided expert advice and opinions on the BBC's Landward programme last Friday. Tom, who has a degree in plantsmanship from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, and also works for PKCT's partner organisation The National Tree Collections of Scotland, discussed the magnificent trees at Castle Leod in Strathpeffer with Dougie Vipond. With his detailed knowledge of world trees, Tom explained that this area is so special due to the fact that many of the trees in the castle grounds, such as the Sweet Chestnut which is the oldest recorded planted tree in Scotland, are not normally found this far north. He went on to describe how this valuable designed landscape, which includes many species of tree from other countries, was brough about due to plant hunter and explorers over the centuries. The programme can be viewed on the BBC iPlayer until the 13th November 2016.
