A historically important and popular hut that provides shelter for people walking the Cateran Trail has been given a £3,600 renovation.

The Upper Lunch Hut, as it is known, is situated near to the Trail’s highest point at Laraig Gate, which was once visited by Queen Victoria during one of her many visits to Highland Perthshire in the 1840s.

Repairs were made to the cladding, windows and the roof; the woodwork was retreated; and drainage improvements were made to ensure the building stays dry and sound for years to come.

Our Strategic Routes Officer, Andy Barrie, who manages the Cateran Trail, commented:

The Upper Lunch Hut is a great resource for visitors to the Cateran Trail as a shelter from the elements and a place to take a break before carrying on to Glenshee.

It had been in need of repairs for some time, so the overhaul of the building and its immediate surrounding area will go a long way to ensuring it continues to serve visitors to the Trail for years.

I would like to thank the landowner for his kind permission to fulfil these works.

These restoration works were funded by Avondale Environmental as part of the NPL Group through the Scottish Landfill Communities Fund.
