Saving the redwoods creates a splash

The official opening of the Inchture Redwoods Pond, by Provost John Hulbert, took place Thursday 1st October following extensive landscape works to save the avenue of historic giant redwoods at Inchture.

In recent years, water has been trapped between the school and the important heritage trees, slowly drowning the roots and killing these giants of nature. In controlling the water levels a large pond has been excavated and landscaped islands created.

A new wetland ecosystem and haven for wildlife, will develop over the years as newly planted trees grow and natural vegetation establishes on the islands and at the water edge. Raised viewing platforms allow the public to observe the wide range of birds, animals inhabiting the area.

The project provides a new educational asset for Inchture Primary School, with the pupils involved in everything from the design of the pond to the planting of trees, weaving willow screens, and the construction of the bird and bat boxes that have been erected around the site.

Woven willow screens and log seats make a natural outdoor classroom for the children.

The project is a remarkable collaboration involving pupils, teachers, parents, the community, Perth & Kinross Council and Perth & Kinross Countryside Trust.

Following the cutting of a ribbon, rangers from the school paired off to show visitors around the pond and wetland. The Incture rangers were: Abi Turner, Freya Purdie, Nicole Melville, Kyle Thomson, Euan Winchester and Jamie Savage.

Lesley Lennon, Head of Inchture Primary School said: “The children have taken a keen interest since the project started. They have enjoyed the experience of watching the work progress from the playground as well as getting directly involved where they could.

The school programme of life skills’ activities, to engage pupils in meaningful learning, has been, and will continue to be enhanced by this project.”

The project is funded by the Breathing Places programme, SITA Trust (Tayside Biodiversity Fund), Quality of Life Trust, and PKCT.
